All students will take General Music at New Market. Students learn a wide variety of musical skills and also learn how music ties in to other subjects such as history, math, and science. Our curriculum is Quaver Music. It's an engaging, online-based textbook which takes a modern approach to teaching kids musical concepts. Students learn to sing, play instruments, notate music, music history, and evaluation techniques. All students in grades 1 through 5 will participate in the Recorder Karate Program. This program gives students the ability to start learning to play an instrument and read music at an early age. Students earn belts by learning the tune that is associated with those belts, and then performing them for the class.

The belts and tunes are listed below:

White: "Hot Cross Buns"; Yellow - "Gently Sleep"; Orange - "Merrily We Roll Along"; Green - "It's Raining"; Purple - "Old MacDonald Had a Farm"; Blue - "When the Saints go Marching In"; Red - "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star"; Brown - "Amazing Grace"; Black - "Ode to Joy"; Silver - "Rocky Top" and Gold - "Ein Kleine Nachtmusik"

There are also more "bonus" options for students who have already completed the Gold Belts.
